When our customer in Sidmouth approached Just Wood Furniture, they already knew they wanted fitted wardrobes for two bedrooms. What they hadn’t found yet was a company willing to properly listen to what they wanted and work through the details with them.
After speaking with a couple of national brands, they felt underwhelmed by the design process and wanted something more personal. That’s when they contacted Just Wood Furniture.
For this particular bedroom project in Sidmouth, the brief was clear: create clean, contemporary fitted bedroom furniture with a calm, seamless appearance across the full width of the room. The wardrobes needed to feel architectural and built into the space, rather than looking like separate units placed side-by-side.
A Challenging Bedroom Layout
One of the biggest challenges with the main bedroom in Sidmouth was a large RSJ (rolled steel joist) running horizontally through the middle of the wall.
In many cases, structural steelwork like this ends up being boxed in separately, often creating awkward breaks in the design. But for this project, the goal was to make the beam almost disappear into the fitted wardrobes themselves.
Chris and the team designed the cabinetry so the wardrobes were carefully notched around the RSJ. The tops of the cabinets and upper door sections were precisely cut to work around the beam while keeping the door lines aligned and visually balanced.
The result is a run of built in wardrobes that feels intentional, clean and symmetrical, despite the structural complication hidden within it.
Watch Chris Walk Through the Project
Floor-to-Ceiling Fitted Bedroom Furniture
The wardrobes were designed to run wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling, helping the installation feel like part of the architecture of the room rather than freestanding furniture.
Careful attention was given to:
Door spacing and proportions
Shadow gaps and junction details
Consistent horizontal lines
Balancing the visual rhythm across the room
Bedroom 1
The customer wanted a minimalist look, so the fitted bedroom furniture was finished with handleless push-to-open doors throughout. Exterior drawer sections were also introduced to help break up the long run of doors and add practical everyday storage.
Bedroom 2
Inside, the layout was designed around how the customer actually uses the space, with a thoughtful combination of:
Hanging space
Shelving
Drawer storage
Taller wardrobe sections for longer garments and bulkier items
This balance between clean exterior design and practical internal storage is often what makes bespoke fitted wardrobes feel so much more usable day-to-day.
Materials & Finish
For this fitted wardrobe project in Sidmouth, the customer chose a soft, contemporary palette that suited the calm feel of the bedroom:

Exterior Finish
Canvas Greige Ari melamine MDF
Interior Finish
Roble Natural Mesura melamine MDF
The combination works beautifully together, giving the wardrobes a warm, understated appearance while remaining durable and easy to maintain.
Installation in Sidmouth
The installation was completed by Matt, Chris, Dan and Aubrey, who worked together to ensure the cabinetry fitted perfectly around the room and the structural beam.
One of the advantages of bespoke built in wardrobes is that everything is made specifically for the room beforehand, meaning the installation process is carefully planned and far more precise than trying to adapt standard-sized furniture on site.
Despite the complexity of the RSJ detail, the finished wardrobes look calm, seamless and completely at home within the space.
What the Customer Said...

5 star Google Review, Adrian D, July 2025
“We had decided to add fitted wardrobes to two of our bedrooms and initially contacted a couple of well-known brands for quotes and input on design. After being slightly underwhelmed by their efforts we contacted Chris at Just Wood Furniture and were immediately impressed by his enthusiasm and willingness to engage with us. Chris explained at the outset that establishing our exact requirements and ensuring that his team could execute them would be an iterative process, but he reassured us that they would be happy to work with us no matter how long it took as the important thing was to ‘get it right’. Chris was as good as his word. Over a period of weeks we had numerous conversations and several face-to-face meetings where we were able to make changes to the design and discuss alternative options if required. The key to Chris’s approach is that he genuinely wants his customers to be happy with the end product. We are more than happy with our wardrobes and would highly recommend Just Wood Furniture.”
