Every home has its quirks, and this project was a perfect example of how thoughtful design can turn a tricky space into something both beautiful and practical.

This lovely old cottage in Sidmouth had wardrobes built against an old, north-facing granite wall. While full of character, the wall was prone to cold and damp, which needed careful consideration from the outset. We designed a solution that actively protects the contents of the wardrobe while improving day-to-day usability.

Keeping Clothes Warm, Dry and Well Ventilated

To combat cold and damp, we incorporated specialist slimline wardrobe heaters within the cabinetry. These provide a gentle, constant flow of warm air inside the wardrobes, helping to maintain a stable environment for clothing and stored items.

To ensure the warmth circulates evenly, we added discreet 5mm slots along the backs of every shelf. This allows heat to rise naturally through the wardrobe, preventing cold spots and ensuring the entire space stays dry and well ventilated. It’s a small detail, but one that makes a big difference over time.

Designed Around How the Client Uses Their Space

Every internal layout was designed entirely around the client’s needs. Shelf heights, hanging sections and storage zones were all individually modelled rather than chosen from standard sizes.

One particularly thoughtful feature sits within the left-hand wardrobe. Here, we designed shelving specifically to hold bespoke storage baskets, positioned one in front of the other. To keep everything easy to access, we created a clever rear access detail, allowing the back basket to be removed without disturbing the one in front. It’s a great example of how bespoke design solves everyday frustrations.

A Truly Bespoke Design Process

The design was led by Tom, who developed an initial concept based on feedback gathered during the client’s survey. From there, he worked closely with the client through several design iterations, gradually refining the layout until it perfectly suited how they wanted to use the space.

Because we are a design-led bespoke fitted furniture company, Tom is not constrained by standard sizes or modular systems. Every shelf, hanging section and drawer was individually modelled, with complete freedom over height, width, depth and angles. This level of flexibility is a real advantage and simply isn’t possible with mass-manufactured furniture, where fixed dimensions often dictate the outcome.

Materials and Finishes

The wardrobe interiors were finished in Hickory Frida from the FINSA 12Twenty range. This durable, high-quality board offers a warm, natural woodgrain feel while standing up to daily use.

Externally, the shaker-style doors, fillers and end panels were spray painted in 'Blue Vein' by Paint & Paper Library. This rich, elegant colour brings a calm but confident presence to the room, pairing traditional styling with a contemporary finish.

Shaker Styling with a Modern Touch

The doors and drawer fronts reflect a classic Shaker design, chosen for its timeless proportions and understated detail. To keep the overall look clean and uncluttered, the client opted for handleless push-to-open mechanisms, blending traditional form with modern function.

Quality Components Throughout

As standard on all Just Wood Furniture projects, we use premium components that are built to last. Door and drawer mechanisms are manufactured in Austria by Blum and come with a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty. Hanging rails are heavy-gauge steel with a chrome finish, supplied by Hafele, offering both strength and durability.

All cabinets are assembled using high-quality Lamello invisible fixings, meaning no visible caps, screws or random holes. The result is a clean, precise finish that reflects the care taken behind the scenes.

Expert Installation by Our In-House Team

This project was installed exclusively by our experienced in-house installation team. The work was overseen by our owner, Chris, ensuring that every detail met the high standards we set for all Just Wood Furniture projects. From fit and finish to final adjustments, nothing is left to chance.

The Finished Result

The completed wardrobes offer far more than just storage. They provide a tailored solution to a challenging environment, combining clever engineering, thoughtful design and beautifully finished cabinetry. It’s a great example of how truly bespoke fitted furniture can enhance both the function and feel of a home.
